Native Plants

Q. Who is Mr. Smarty Plants?
A: There are those who suspect Wildflower Center volunteers are the culpable and capable culprits. Yet, others think staff members play some, albeit small, role. You can torture us with your plant questions, but we will never reveal the Green Guru's secret identity.
Did you know you can access the Native Plant Information Network with your web-enabled smartphone?

Title: Evergreen native trees for Austin
Answered by: Barbara Medford
QUESTION:
Please recommend all evergreen native trees for Austin TX.ANSWER:
We will do this by going to our Recommended Species section, clicking on Central Texas on the map, then NARROW YOUR SEARCH, on which we will select by "Tree" under habit. Then, we will follow the plant link to the page on that particular tree and find out if it is evergreen. There is not a whole lot of choice in evergreen trees, and two of these we are listing, Ilex vomitoria (yaupon) and Rhus virens (evergreen sumac) are really classified as shrubs, but can be trained up into small trees. The others are Juniperus virginiana (eastern redcedar), Quercus fusiformis (plateau oak) and Sophora secundiflora (Texas mountain-laurel).
