Native Plants
Q. Who is Mr. Smarty Plants?
A: There are those who suspect Wildflower Center volunteers are the culpable and capable culprits. Yet, others think staff members play some, albeit small, role. You can torture us with your plant questions, but we will never reveal the Green Guru's secret identity.
Did you know you can access the Native Plant Information Network with your web-enabled smartphone?
Ask Mr. Smarty Plants is a free service provided by the staff and volunteers at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center.

Title: Growing Avocados in South Texas
Answered by: Anne Van Nest
QUESTION:
What types of avocados can be grown in South Texas?ANSWER:
Avocados are not native to North America, so Mr. Smarty Plants would rather discuss some other edible plants to grow in South Texas, like pecans or walnuts or persimmon or crabapple or prickly pears, etc. There's a list of Texas edible native plants on our website if you would like to learn about these great plants.
Texas A&M AgriLife Extension though does have some very good information for you about growing avocados and selecting the best type.
