Monarch butterflies (Danaus plexippus) undertake an incredible multigenerational migration from Mexico to the northern U.S. and Canada and back again every year. Check out our newly redesigned Little House and learn more about these incredible creatures at Power the Migration: A Monarch Exhibition. This event is included with the cost of general admission.

About the Exhibition

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) recently added the monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus) to its endangered species list. Power the Migration is designed to foster a love of monarchs and encourage visitors to take action to support these creatures during migration season and beyond. You are invited to:

  • Get a close-up look at monarch specimen
  • Learn about the monarch’s migratory route and life-cycle
  • Experience the monarch life-cycle through Theresa DiMenno’s “Delicate Balance: Metamorphosis of the Monarch Butterfly” 
  • See if you can tell the difference between monarchs and their lookalikes
  • Learn about the connection between monarchs and Mexican culture
  • Discover how you can support these endangered creatures with native plants and more!

This exhibition is part of the City of Austin’s Roots & Wings Festival.
