GARDEN VIEWS

An inside glimpse of the gardens from our Instagram feed

Tea time, anyone? 🫖 Prairie tea (𝘊𝘳𝘰𝘵𝘰𝘯 𝘮𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘨𝘺𝘯𝘶𝘴) certainly lives up to its name! This fragrant herb makes a delightful brew, plus it’s great for wildlife – doves love it, and it’s a host plant for Goatweed leafwing (𝘈𝘯𝘢𝘦𝘢 𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘳𝘪𝘢) caterpillars. 🐛

Director of Horticulture Andrea DeLong-Amaya shares tips for responsibly collecting seeds and growing this Texas native. 🌱

Just remember: always be 100% sure of your plant ID, be careful when foraging from roadsides, and get permission before collecting on private land.

Looks like you know your seed pods - yesterday's image was Devil’s Claw (Proboscidea louisianica)! 🌿 Other names include Unicorn Plant and Ram's Horn. This plant is known for its claw-like seed pods that latch onto animals (or anything that brushes past!) to spread its seeds. 🦌

The trumpet-shaped flowers are beautiful, but the real showstopper is the fruit. When young, it’s edible and okra-like, but once it hardens, it transforms into a long, sharp shell that splits open to reveal the seeds - hence the claw-moniker. If you’re growing these in your yard and want to protect pets or wildlife, be sure to harvest the fruit before it turns into those tough, woody claws.

Oh, and trust us on this one - wear gloves! These plants will leave behind a sticky residue on your fingers.

Thanks for playing! If you want to harvest Devil's Claw next year, give pickling a try with the recipe at the link in our bio.

Look at this funky seed pod! Can you guess which plant it belongs to? 🌿🔍

Here are a few clues:
1️⃣ This plant is native to the southwestern U.S. and Mexico.
2️⃣ Its seed pods are designed to latch onto animals, so it can spread far and wide!
3️⃣ Indigenous peoples have traditionally used its fibrous pods for basket weaving.

Drop your guesses in the comments below. We’ll reveal the answer soon — it’s a wicked-cool one!

Can't decide what you want to plant this fall? Don't sweat it! 🐝 There's still time to map out your garden dreams before our Fall Native Plant Sale, which opens to the public starting Oct. 4 (Members-only weekend is Sept. 27 - 29). Maybe take a note from this sweat bee (Agapostemon sp.), who's clearly partial to Texas kidneywood (Eysenhardtia texana) - a lovely drought-tolerant shrub that blooms intermittently in Central Texas from May to October.

With its fragrant white flowers and airy structure, it’s a must-have for any garden looking to support native bees, butterflies, and more. As an added bonus, kidneywood is somewhat deer-resistant thanks to the pungent smell of its deciduous leaves.

What are you hoping to incorporate into your garden this fall? Keep an eye out for our list of plants for sale - coming soon! 🌿 For first dibs and 10% off, consider becoming a Wildflower Center member! 👀More info about the Fall Native Plant Sale at the link in our bio.
