Docent Opportunities

Docent Opportunties at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center

The three-week docent training is required for volunteering in assignments below. The schedule, application, commitment and cost are described in detail here.

Youth Group Docent
Help us inspire the next Lady Bird Johnson or John Muir. We have the opportunity to reach Austin youth when they visit the Wildflower Center. On Tuesdays and Thursdays throughout the school year, small groups of children rotate through a series of discovery stations, where you might help demonstrate leaf shape or pollination. We're building and training both Tuesday and Thursday teams of 10-20 youth group docents to help us start these kids down the path of environmental stewardship. Work in the Little House meeting and greeting children and families, doing fun hands-on activities, and helping keep the Little House ready for visitors.

Gallery Docent
A rotating staff of around 40 Volunteer Docents staff the information desk in our Visitor's Gallery, ready to answer questions and orient visitor's to our site. Shifts open up periodically and can be weekly, bimonthly or monthly. Docent Training required, see above.

Adult Tour Docent
Many groups visiting the Wildflower Center request tours of our grounds especially during the Spring. Our Tour Docents meet these groups by appointment and enjoy sharing their passion for our mission, history and native plants with the public. Docent Training required, see above.

Roving Docent
Be a floating or roving volunteer docent is something between leading a tour and working the information desk in our gallery. You don't have to know all the answers just where to find them if you don't. We'd just like you to walk the grounds, meet and greet, point out things of interest, and in general, be your charming, interesting, helpful selves. Docent Training required, see above.

Speaker's Bureau Docent
Help us get the message about native plants out to our communities. As our society becomes more aware of the environment, they want to learn more about what they can do and native plants are part of the solution. We experience this desire for knowledge everyday here at the Wildflower Center where we will teach you what we know in training sessions, so that you can help us get the word out. Docent Training required, see above.

Little House Steward

Little House Stewards greet and orient kids and families with the Center and activities, make them feel welcome in this special place for children, and guide them through the Little House experience on a weekly basis for several weeks in the Fall and again during the Spring. Some organizing and tidying work is also very helpful. Docent training is not required for this assignment, but is recommended.
