Collect your materials: one or more 4x4-inch blocks of untreated wood, 5/16-inch and 7/16-inch drill bits, drill, a 6x6-inch plank for a roof (optional), and screws for mounting.
Drill holes of varying sizes in block of wood, leaving about 3/4-inch in between each hole. Do not drill all the way through block; bees will not use if open at both ends.
Choose the east or southeast side of a building, fence, or tree, with some shelter if possible. If not adding a roof, angle down slightly to prevent water from entering.
Mount the house with the bottom 3-5 Ĺ-feet above the ground. Do not move again until at least November; you donít want to disrupt the nesting bees!
Observe the bees to see if they are using the house you provided. Notice what plants they like and add more to your garden to keep a happy, healthy population.
Check the house a few times a year to make sure it is in order. In the winter, clean out the holes to get it ready for the following spring.
