2005 Summer Family Workshops

Join the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center for family-oriented summer activities. In June and August, the Center invites parents to learn alongside their children during its Summer Family Workshops, a series of half-day workshops geared towards children ranging from age four to 13.

This series of Saturday workshops will explore our wetlands, investigate the secrets of soil, learn about cacti, and discover the secrets of the Edwards Aquifer.

Each workshop's topic is age appropriate and designed for hands-on exploration. All workshops are from 8:30 a.m. to noon on specified dates and require advance registration. The cost for each workshop is $25 for members and $35 for non-members. Registration fees covers one child and one adult. An adult is required to attend with each child. Workshop size is limited.

Session Overviews:

Our Awesome Aquifer
Saturday, June 4: for children 7 through 9 years old
Where does the rain go? What happens to it underneath our feet? Hike to a hidden sinkhole and descend into our cave to discover the secrets of the Edwards Aquifer. We'll outfit ourselves with real spelunking gear and explore the Wildflower Cave (on-site), so be prepared to get muddy!

Get to the "Point" with Cacti
Saturday, June 11: for children 8 through 12 years old
Why are cacti so pointy? What parts of cactus can you eat? Which cactus is the state plant of Texas? We'll discover the answer to these and other questions as we "Get to the Point with Cacti." We'll explore the Wildflower Center grounds and discover the many uses, habitats, shapes, and sizes of cacti. The workshop will include hands-on activities and a project for your child to take home.

Wetland Wonders
Saturday, June 18: for children 4 through 6 years old
Frogs and lily pads and dragonflies! Oh, my! The ponds and streams at the Wildflower Center are packed with life--some of them so small we'll need a microscope to see them. We'll investigate our own wetlands to discover how these creatures live among their water-loving plant and animal friends. The workshop includes making a model pond to take home and a chance to get wet.

Soil: It's Alive!
Saturday, June 25: for children 5 through 8 years old
Make friends with worms and mushrooms as we take a close-up look at soil--how it came to be, what lives in it, and why it is so valuable. We'll make our own worm composting bins to take home.

Exploring the Aquifer
Saturday, August 6: for children 10 through 13 years old
Where does the rain go? What happens to it underneath our feet? Hike to a hidden sinkhole and descend into our cave to discover the secrets of the Edwards Aquifer. We'll outfit ourselves with real spelunking gear and explore the Wildflower Cave (on-site), so be prepared to get muddy!
