What: Luminations: The Wildflower Center’s gift to the community.
When: 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, December 11 and 12. Free admission.
Where: Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, 4801 La Crosse Ave, Austin, TX 78739
Background: The gardens will be ablaze with lights from more than 3,000 luminarias and 5,000 twinkle lights as visitors enjoy eclectic holiday music, a puppet show, food vendors such as Hey Cupcake!, and more. Admission is free with two food items for the Capital Area Food Bank.
Saturday’s musical performers include the Austin Mandolin Orchestra, Patton Sparks Band, the Dixieland Accidentals and more. Singer/songwriter Arielle Nicole performs Sunday, which also features Bailey Middle School’s Steel Drum Band, the Austin Banjo Club and other artists.
Holiday trees and music grace the McDermott Learning Center. Free Trade Scarves will have South American items for sale and on Sunday, Hey Cupcake! will provide their treats. The café will offer holiday menu items both days and goodies in the courtyard. More snacking opportunities will be provided outdoors by Hill Kountry Kettle Korn, Global Architecture Brigade and UT’s Black Graduate Student Association and other organizations. Non-student organizations will donate part of their profit to the Wildflower Center or the Capital Area Food Bank.
For kids: Frosty the Snowman will be on hand and Scooty Roo & Christini provide a holiday puppet show Saturday evening at 7:45 p.m. in the courtyard. Also children can make holiday cards, reindeer and snowflake ornaments and more in the Visitors Gallery to take home both days.
Store Events: Saturday from 6 to 9 p.m., Kathy Appelt will sign “The Underneath,” “Keeper” and “Miss Lady Bird’s Wildflowers,” and artist Andrea Penn Bain shows her art. Sunday evening, samples of jams, jellies and jalapeño pickles will be available.
