FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
April 21, 2009

Gala and Silent Art Auction

What:  Annual Wildflower Center Gala and Silent Art Auction

When:  Friday, May 1, 2009. Cocktails at 6:30 p.m. Dinner at 8 p.m.

Where:  Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center at the University of Texas at Austin, 4801 La Crosse Ave., Austin, TX

Background:  As the City of Austin considers environmentally sensitive event rules, the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center has expanded its sustainable approaches by unveiling a Wildflower Gala and Silent Art Auction with the theme of "Shades of Green: Elegant and Eco-Friendly." The Gala Committee has taken great care to ensure this event leaves a small environmental footprint - without sacrificing its traditional appeal.

The sustainable steps on display will include serving locally-grown, in-season organic food catered by The Four Seasons and decorating with potted native plants. Bio-fueled shuttles will be available from that hotel, energy efficient lights will illuminate outdoor Gala settings, and recycling and composting will be among other measures taken.

This garden party is the center's major annual fundraising event, with proceeds benefiting its education and research programs designed to save plants for future generations, restore sustainable landscapes and provide other sustainable benefits.

A special Gala feature is the Silent Art Auction, with 60 pieces of art being contributed by accomplished artists. Co-chairs of the Art Auction are:  Melanie Barnes and Carolyn Long, both of Austin. Members are:  Janet Allen, Becky Beaver, Mary Margaret Farabee, John Irwin, Jean Rather, Cheryl Savage, Nancy Scanlan and Wally Workman, all of Austin.

Lady Bird Johnson's granddaughters, Nicole Covert and Catherine Robb, are honorary co-chairs of this year's Gala. Members of the Gala Steering Committee are:  Tyrrell Flawn of Washington, D.C.; Marian W. Hill of Atlanta, Ga.; Jeffrey Howell of Los Alamos, N.M.; and Carolyn Curtis, Nancy Garrison, Minnie Hollyman, Luci Baines Johnson, Lynn Meredith and Alane Simons, all of Austin.
