Salt Spring Checkerbloom, Rocky Mountain Checker-mallow, Prairie Mallow

Malvaceae (Mallow Family)

This perennial’s rhizomes bear dense, 6 in. wide tufts of dark-green, palmately lobed leaves above which grows a flowering stalk 3-4 ft. high. Showy, pink to purple, hollyhock-like flowers line the stalk in narrow, leaning sprays.

The many checker-mallows with pink flowers, from coastal marshes to moderate elevations in the mountains, are difficult to distinguish and differentiated only by technical characteristics.
