A succulent, grayish-green plant with branched, prostrate stems bearing star-like, usually pink flowers in upper leaf axils. This is the only Sesuvium species in the West. Other sea purslanes grow to the east or south, most in saline soil, some near the coast (hence the common name).

Native Habitat: Open low spots in salty or alkaline soil.
