Pipsissewa was a member of the Wintergreen family (family Pyrolaceae), which consists of perennial herbs, with or without leaves, with flowers often dish-shaped, borne singly, in racemes, or in branched clusters.

Many authorities show this genus to now belong in the Ericaceae family.
