A branching plant with slender, mostly smooth stems bearing narrow leaves and numerous flower heads with blue-violet to rose (sometimes white) rays surrounding a yellow or reddish central disc.

This large aster is abundant in low areas along the coast. There are many color forms, including those with white or rose rays. The species name, Latin for "of New Belgium," is from an early name for New York.

Size Notes: Up to about 4 feet tall.
Fruit: Fruit is a cypsela (pl. cypselae). Though technically incorrect, the fruit is often referred to as an achene.
