A gray matted plant with white to purplish flowers in dense racemes held well above thick clusters of basal leaves.
The genus name honors T. Smielowski, an 18th-century Russian botanist. Alpine Smelowskia (S. ovalis), with pods 1/8-1/4 inches (3-6 mm) long and petioles lacking stiff hairs, occurs in the mountains of central Washington south to central Oregon
