Shrub or small tree with slender trunk, upright branches, and narrow crown.

This species was first found along the Mackenzie River, which was discovered by Alexander Mackenzie (1755?-1820), the Scottish fur trader and explorer.

Native Habitat: Wet soils of stream borders and swamps; in coniferous forests.
