Navarretia leptalea (A. Gray) L.A. Johnson ssp. leptalea
Bridges' Gilia
Polemoniaceae (Phlox Family)
Synonym(s): Gilia leptalea, Gilia leptalea ssp. leptalea
USDA Symbol: NALEL2
USDA Native Status: L48 (N)
A bushy, airy plant with many slender branches, small leaves, and small, deep pink, funnel-shaped flowers on thread-like stalks in leaf axils.
The pink color of the flowers is among the richest in the genus; the flowers of many other species are nearly white, pale pink, or lavender. The species of this large western genus are difficult to distinguish from one another but usually can be recognized as Gilia by the fairly small, trumpet- or funnel-shaped flowers, the three branches on the style, and the alternate, often pinnately divided leaves.
