Hybanthus concolor

Hybanthus concolor (T.F. Forst.) Spreng.

Eastern Greenviolet, Green Violet

Violaceae (Violet Family)

Synonym(s): Cubelium concolor, Viola concolor

USDA Symbol: HYCO6

USDA Native Status: L48 (N), CAN (N)

Greenish, drooping, bilaterally symmetrical flowers in groups of 1-3 on short recurved stalks rising in leaf axils.

This species, the only member of the genus in the East, only vaguely resembles other violets, but its five united stamens and club-like pistil are characteristic of the family. The genus name is from the Greek hybos ("hump-backed") and anthos ("flower") and probably refers to the drooping flowers. The species name means "of one color," reflecting the green of both the sepals and petals.
