A colony-forming perennial with basal rosettes of broad, rounded, light-green leaves subtending a 16 in., naked flowering stem. Two to sixteen, magenta to white cyclamen-like flowers nod in clusters from the top of the stem. Four or five showy petals are swept backward, and the beak-like dark stamens and stigma shoot forward and downward.

This plant is dormant by midsummer.

Propagation

Description: Propagate by root division or seed. Plant seeds preferably in fall. Seedlings take four or more years to mature and flower. Rootstocks should be divided in fall, making sure each piece has as least one bud.
