Southwestern Ringstem

Nyctaginaceae (Four O'clock Family)

Synonym(s):

USDA Symbol: ANLE5

USDA Native Status: L48 (N)

An ungainly, spindly plant with large fleshy leaves near base and pale pink or pink and white, trumpet-shaped flowers scattered about widely branched top.

In the heat of the day, the tubes of spent flowers hang bedraggled. At sundown, as new flowers open, the long stamens and style unravel and align in a graceful sweep from the narrow opening. The common name ringstem derives from the sticky, glandular rings encircling the stem.
