A 6-24 in. perennial with basal leaves, deeply three-lobed. A terminal flower, subtended by a single pair of leaves, has numerous white to purple, petal-like sepals surrounding many yellow stamens.

Anemone is derived from Greek word "anemos" meaning "wind"; the flowers would supposedly open with spring breezes.
