Prostrate, mat-forming plants have spike-like clusters of pale lavender or blue flowers arising from the leaf axil.

This weed is native to the United States, the British Isles, Europe, and Asia. Its species name means of the shops and probably indicates that it was at one time sold for its reputed diuretic and astringent properties.
