An erect to spreading, usually 4-7 ft. manzanita with crooked, smooth, reddish stems and dull green, velvety leaves. Flowers are white and occur in short, spreading clusters. Berries are reddish-brown.

Conditions Comments: There are many natural varieties of this species. Var. campbelliae and var. crassifolia are two which are commerially available. Considered among the toughest of the manzanitas.

Propagation

Description: Propagation by seed is can be difficult.
Seed Collection: The outer fleshy part of the furit may be removed by macering the fruits with water and separating the nutlets by flotation or air-screening.
Seed Treatment: Seeds of most Arctostaphylos species have hard seed coats and dormant embryos. Scarification (several hours in H2SO4) followed by stratification may improve germination.
