Leaves and bright yellow, bilaterally symmetrical flowers are crowded near top of stem.
Phases of this species with unlobed leaves occur in the same region as those with deeply lobed leaves. However, in southwestern Oregon and northwestern California, the phase with lobed leaves is rare.
