Several weak leafless stems curving upward from a cluster of long-stalked leaves and bearing pale purple to deep blue-violet, slightly bilaterally symmetrical flowers in short racemes.

This is one of the humbler, early-flowering Synthyris species; in the dim light of the early spring woods, its low dark flowers are easily overlooked.
