Tule is a member of the sedge family (family Cyperaceae). Sedges are herbs of wet sites, often grass-like, with stems commonly 3-sided. There are about 90 genera and 4,000 species, found nearly throughout the world. Cottongrass, Bulrush, and Tule are in the family.
