Vanbrunt's Polemonium
Polemoniaceae (Phlox Family)
Synonym(s): Polemonium caeruleum ssp. vanbruntiae
USDA Symbol: POVA5
USDA Native Status: L48 (N), CAN (N)
An erect stem, leafy to top, bearing few-flowered clusters of bell-shaped, bluish-purple flowers with long, protruding stamens.
The paired leaflets seem to form a ladder up the stem and account for the common name, which alludes to the ladder to heaven seen by Jacob in a dream, as told in the Old Testament. This species is rare throughout its range.
