Large, introduced, shade tree with straight, stout trunk and broad, open crown of spreading to slightly drooping branches and coarse foliage.
London Planetree is a hybrid of the Sycamore of eastern United States and the Oriental Planetree (Platanus orientalis) of southeastern Europe and Asia Minor. It is also popular as a street tree in Europe, where it originated probably before 1700. The plants can be clipped into screens and arbors. The genus name Platanus is the classical Latin and Greek name of Oriental Planetree, from the Greek word for broad, which describes the leaves.
