Many-branched shrub or small tree with rounded crown. Reaches 16 feet (5 m) in height with a diameter of 4" (10 cm). Leaves are 1-3 1/2" (2.5-9 cm) long, 3/4-2 1/2" (2-6 cm) wide. Ovate to nearly round, short-pointed at tip, finely saw-toothed, with gland-tipped tepals.
This western relative of Fireberry Hawthorn (C. chrysocarpa) was named after the Columbia River, where it was discovered. One of the northernmost hawthorns, it can be planted for erosion control in dry areas where it is native.
