An intergeneric hybrid (Arygroxiphium grayanum × Dubautia laxa) (Webref: 27). A rare shrub found only on foggy slopes in western Maui, Hawaii. (Reslit: 2843).

Plant Characteristics

Leaf Arrangement: Alternate
Leaf Complexity: Simple

Size Notes: Maximum height of this hybrid varies from 6 to 15 feet.
Leaf: Leaves elliptic-ligulate. "Leaves as for Argyroxyphium grayanum but a little smaller, sharply but very minutely denticulate, up to 11 cm. long and 1.3 cm. wide, commonly 5-9-nerved, lower ones (in the herbarium crowning the nude but very densely leaf-scarred and about 1 dm. long fragment of branch) commonly crowded, upper ones spirally disposed or irregularly alternate." (Reslit:2843).
Flower: "Inflorescence corymboid-racemose or -subpaniculate, commonly 1 dm. long, the axis and branches slender and subterete or the axis moderately angulate. Capitula not numerous, more often 8-15 for a single branch, manifestly cernuous, discoid, commonly 6-10 mm. tall and broad, peduncles or pedicels glandular- tomentose. Involucral bracts commonly only 13-25, separate or slightly and irregularly connate, commonly subbiseriate. Florets more often 20-35, corolla about 4 mm. long, tube densely hispidulous." (Reslit: 2843).
Fruit: Fruit is a cypsela (pl. cypselae). Though technically incorrect, the fruit is often referred to as an achene. "Achenes small; their body 5-6 mm. long, narrowly cuneate-clavate, blackish-brown or even almost black, moderately and suberectly whitish-hispid on the 5 angles; awns of pappus more often 10-18, variously consolidated into fewer paleae, these straw-colored, fimbriate-ciliate, 2-4 mm. long." (Reslit 2843).

Distribution

Native Distribution: Endemic to steep slopes near the summit of Mauna 'Eke Crater on West Maui Mountain (Mauna Kahalawai) on the Island of Maui, Hawaii.

Conditions Comments: This species grows in an area of cool, foggy conditions most of the time. The area receives more than 400 cm. of rain each year.
