Native Plant Focus: Native plants comprise our native habitat areas along the trails. We also use natives in many beds in the landscape demo areas. A Native Plant Garden is in the design state.

Description: The Corpus Christi Botanical Gardens & Nature Center--one of the region's five major visitor attractions--is a leading SouthTexas nature tourism destination showcasing colorful, exotic floral exhibits blended with vast conserved areas of native habitat and natural wetlands. The 180 acre site is an integral part of the city's growing Oso Creek Greenbelt system, is a Texas Watchable Wildlife Program site, and is on the Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail. It also is recognized as one of the key birding sites inCorpus Christi, which has been named the "Birdiest City" in the United States. Major floral exhibits include the Orchid House, Exhibit House, Plumeria Collection, Sensory Garden, Hibiscus Garden, Arid Garden, Rose Garden & Rose Garden Pavilion, Water Garden, Hummingbird Garden & Landscape Demo Beds surrounding the Visitors Center. The 2500-plus orchid collection recently was featured in Texas Highways magazine. A "Walk on the Wild Side"--through protected natural wetland and native habitat--features the shaded Bird & Butterfly Trail, Birding Tower, Palapa Grande on Gator Lake, Wetlands Awareness Boardwalk plus the Oso Creek Loop Trail. The USDA's Natural Resources Conservation Service, based in Washington, D.C., recently honored the Gardens & Nature Center's $90,000 Wetland Water Containment, Restoration & Boardwalk project at an award ceremony and media conference. The Botanical Gardens & Nature Center has a full calendar of horticultural & environmental education classes and workshops for adults; children's gardening programs and Wilderness Experience Kids Camp; plus the SPRING GARDEN FESTIVAL & PLANT SALE in April; NATUREFEST & FALL PLANT SALE in October; and KRISTIE KRINGLE'S GARDEN SHOPPE OPEN HOUSE in early December. Several picturesque sites, including the beautiful Rose Garden & Pavilion, are available to rent for weddings and other celebrations. Docent-guided tours for school and other groups are available September through May. Open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., closed Mondays.
