Native Plant Focus: CCI's conservation focus is on the scientific monitoring and habitat restoration of vulnerable species of cacti, and at present most of our effort is on Astrophytum asterias (star cactus) and the genus Lophophora williamsii (peyote) and its Mexican endemic congeners.

Publications: Terry M and Mauseth JD. 2006. Root-shoot anatomy and post-harvest vegetative clonal development in Lophophora williamsii (Cactaceae: Cacteae): Implications for conservation. Sida, Contributions to Botany 22: 565-592. Terry M, Steelman KL , Guilders

Description: The Cactus Conservation Institute is dedicated to the study and preservation of vulnerable cacti in their natural range – starting with peyote and star cactus. To accomplish this vision the latest techniques are being applied to understand these vulnerable hunted species, from their DNA up. All interests are being respected: the regulatory agencies, the Native American Church, the ranchers, as well as the scientific community.
