Native Plant Focus: Grow Native! is an award-winning state program that encourages use of native plants on all landscapes and works to increase business opportunities for native plant industry businesses. The program’s distinctive strategy uses fresh marketing techniques along with education and demonstration to reach retail consumers, federal, state and local government agencies; and commercial clients. Judy Allmon developed the unique concept in 2000 for the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC). Allmon was transferred to the Missouri Department of Agriculture (MDA) in June, 2004 to expand Grow Native!’s marketing, membership services and business development. MDC will continue to assist with public education. Grow Native! offers public workshops and professional trainings on the effective use of native plants in all landscapes. Grow Native!'s web site, www.grownative.org, has a broad variety of useful information and features. Additionally, we provide our professional members with marketing tools including full-color plant tags, bench cards and client referrals. By using coordinated materials and industry-wide branding, MDA can help increase demand for and use of Missouri native plant materials. MDA’s primary goal will be to build the Grow Native! brand and translate increasing brand recognition and brand value into profits at the business level. MDA will also explore new, alternative native plant markets and related agribusiness opportunities to help identify, assess and prioritize new market opportunities.
