Several erect stems with bright orange to red, flower-like tips, the bracts brightly colored.

This is one of the West's most common dry-land paintbrushes. The genus is easily recognized but many species are notoriously difficult to identify. The genus name, which honors the Spanish botanist Domingo Castillejo, is usually pronounced cast-til-lay'-yah.
