Dr. Mark Simmons, ecologist at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, is among the staff who serve as environmental landscape consultants and conduct research using native plants and ecological systems to solve challenges in the landscape. He stands near vegetated roofs used in research he has led. This research has revealed that manufactured green roof products vary greatly in their environmental benefits. At left sit plots of native grasses that are outperforming traditional lawn turf in their ability to handle foot traffic and other lawn needs.
