We design and manage our gardens to teach, inspire and please and to promote the use of native plants. Our gardens show how Texas native plants may be used in many landscapes and garden styles to bridge the gap between people and the natural world. On our 279 acres, we feature about 650 species of Texas native plants with a focus on the Central Texas Hill Country.
Don't miss the Courtyard, the Hill Country Stream and Woodland Garden, the Theme Gardens, the Home Owner Inspiration Gardens, the Butterly Garden and Insectary, the ponds and water features.
The Little House Courtyard & Garden is located adjacent to the Little House in the southwest corner of the main courtyard of the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center. The courtyard and gardens are designed for young children ages two to six and encourages outdoor exploration with adult supervision. The gardens surrounding the Little House feature a cozy patch of buffalo grass ideal for game playing and storytelling. The buffalo grass is rimmed by a raised garden featuring a variety of grasses (such as Big Muhly), flowering plants (including Big Red Sage, Texas Star, and Pink Evening Primrose) and shade-providing native trees like Cedar Elm and Kidneywood.
The Little House Courtyard is an open air, largely shaded are that provides a pleasant space for play and exploration. The Courtyard design incorporates a variety interesting native plants that help children learn about shapes, smells, textures and colors while having fun. The Courtyard also features items that encourage "pretend" play such as a wikiup (a framed hut used by nomadic Native Americans); a shaded arbor; tree stump stools; and large pots in which children can dig for plastic insects and lizards. With these features, the Courtyard is not only a place where children can play but also a place where they can have a hands-on experience with plants. In addition, the Little House Courtyard offers parents a shaded area to rest while they supervise their children at play.
