Abstract

Evaluates the effects of plant canopies on the establishment of the invasive Phalaris arundinacea. In a mesocosm experiment, species compositions of Glyceria striata plus 1, 6, or 15 native species rapidly created closed canopies that prevented the establishment of P. arundinacea. Based on this result and those of two other experiments, the authors conclude that in disturbance-created gaps, native species-rich canopies provide greater resistance to P. arundinacea invasion than species-poor canopies.
