Abstract
Discusses competition among pollen grains to fertilize ovules in Hibiscus moscheutos. This competition involves either the arrival time on stigmas and/or the growth of pollen tubes. Hand pollination experiments were conducted to determine whether short delays in pollen arrival time affected the average success of pollination. The second pollen donor sired fewer seeds than pollen arriving earlier. However, when the earlier pollen donor was delayed, it did not sire more seeds. This suggests that the dynamics of pollen tube competition are complex in this species.Suggested Citation
