Abstract

Describes the interaction between the moth, Cactoblastis cactorum, and one of its hosts plants, Opuntia stricta, in the context of CO2 detection. The moth has CO2 sensors that detect CO2 gradients. The CO2 signals the moth to the location of host plants. This study examines the effects of changed atmospheric CO2 levels on the moth's ability to lay eggs on the host plant. Rapidly fluctuating CO2 concentrations and doubling CO2 levels reduced the frequency of oviposition.
