The First Lady's Flowers

Visitors to the Smithsonian Institution's GardenFest  this year had an opportunity to learn about Lady Bird Johnson's national beautification projects from Wildflower Center representatives and a new display describing the Highway Beautification Act of 1965.  The theme of GardenFest, held each year in the Enid P. Haupt Garden on the grounds of the Smithsonian Castle in Washington, D.C., was "Scenic Routes" and the Wildflower Center was asked to attend in honor of Mrs. Johnson's contributions to the nation's highways.

Hundreds of people from all over the nation visited the exhibit, learning about native plants and getting garden advice from Andrea DeLong-Amaya, the Center's Director of Horticulture.  Other exhibits at GardenFest included beneficial bugs, Monarch butterfly gardens, seeds and orchids.  Tour were available for five of the nine Smithsonian gardens.
