Lowery, Megan

Megan Lowery considers herself a plant enthusiast, not an expert, but she is happy to share her plant experiences and plant photos. She has worked at the UT MD Anderson Cancer Research Center Science Park and has lived in Bastrop County, Texas for 30 years.

Megan’s interest in the natural world came from her parents. They loved to travel and learn about history and nature along the way. Her family’s several years in Puerto Rico, where Megan was born, strengthened their interest in flowers and plants. During her childhood, Megan’s family drove to many places, traveling to most of the lower 48 states.

After raising her five children, Megan’s mother, Margaret Phillips, devoted her time to traveling, both to be with her grandchildren and to enjoy, photograph and learn about nature. Megan’s sister settled in Massachusetts in the 1960’s, where she learned about New England wildflowers and shared her knowledge with the family, intensifying their fascination with native flora. Her brother and his wife did the same with West Coast floras when they made their home in California.

Megan moved to Texas in 1968, where she met and married her husband, Richard. They and her mom worked on Texas natives together over the years. Megan’s Degree in Biology included studies in botany, ornithology and several ecology classes. Megan and Richard were drawn together by their love of flowers and music. His degree in horticulture and their experiences working in garden centers added to their body of knowledge.

Megan and her mother joined the Bastrop County Audubon Society in its early days. She has also been involved in the Texas Master Naturalist Program and the Native Plant Society, which both give opportunities to learn and to share natural history.

The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center is committed to developing the premier resource for native plant images in North America through continued growth of the Plant Image Gallery. You can help us achieve our mission ...to increase the sustainable use and conservation of native wildflowers, plants, and landscapes... by becoming a contributor.
