Shot: Close-up of a stem bearing leaves. Photographer's note: "This is Gulf Spike-moss. It is actually not a moss but related to ferns. Some authors consider it a variety of Selaginella apoda. My experience questions that. Habitat alone is a big difference. Selaginella ludoviciana grows most often in much drier situations and can produce very large colonies. Selaginella apoda rarely grows away from sheltered wet conditions. Selaginella ludoviciana is very elongated and sprawls and Selaginella apoda is often compact and less sprawling."
