Responses of Poly-Cultural Native Turf to Water Stress and Weed Invasion

Turf grasses are great consumers of water, fertilizer, gasoline and other resources. In many regions lawns are considered to be too environmentally expensive to maintain. This research took an ecological approach to this important component of our landscapes and found that a mixture of native turf grasses may require less maintenance and inputs, without compromising other characteristics essential to the broad range of applications such as lawns golf courses, roadsides and parks. By simulating biodiverse native grasslands this turf requires less mowing, less water, has fewer weeds and has a finer-texture than conventional lawn species.
