Sustainable Roadside Management

Five years of research into native plant success and invasive species control along roadways allowed the Ecosystem Design Group to develop strategies that work with varied regional climactic conditions, enrich soils with recycled low-nutrient organic matter and prevent unnecessary soil compaction. The result is vibrant vegetation that prevents erosion while reducing maintenance costs and contributing to a healthy ecosystem. Such sustainable practices are now being used working with TBG on a large-scale roadside project in Williamson County where conventional sodding and seeding was defeated by steep and rocky terrain. The group also has developed a unique soil mix from recycled glass, mulch and rice hull ash that allows water to infiltrate soil at very high rates.
